Reunited with nurse 'angels'

AN author from Port Talbot has had an emotional reunion with three "angels" who helped her through the darkest days of her life.

Melanie Davies was aged just 15 when she broke her back in a motorbike accident at Aberavon Beach.

That was 30 years ago this week. And Melanie has now been reunited for the first time with three of the nurses who helped look after her at Neath General Hospital.

The former Glan Afan Comprehensive School pupil, who was then Melanie Bowen, has written her autobiography, Never Say Die, recounting that life-changing accident and the events that followed.

Melanie is donating all her proceeds to Treat Trust Wales, a charity she is spearheading to develop a £10 million therapy centre in the grounds of Morriston Hospital.

And while she was doing a book signing session in WHSmith in Swansea, she finally caught up with three of the nurses who had looked after her — Elaine O'Rourke, Pat Dawes and Sandra Kenny.

"They were all such caring people," said Melanie, who now lives with husband Mike near Pontardawe.

"That's why nurses are called angels. They helped me with the transition from one life to another.

"I will definitely be seeing them again. We've sworn to be bosom buddies and never lose contact again."

Melanie says she also hopes to meet up with the other nurses who helped her during her time on Ward 8.

Melanie is now working with Mike on a sequel to Never Say Die. And the couple are about to hit the road after the success of the signing in WHSmith.

"It went so well that WHSmith has asked us to do signings in Neath, Cardigan and Carmarthen to start with, then all the stores in South Wales," said Melanie.
